The number two spot goes to Bakersfield's freshman standout Nathan Morgan, a Cadet National Champion & two-time All-American. Other standouts include, state qualifiers David Villagram (Brawley), Gerrard Contreras (Buchanan), Frank Sanchez (Bishop Amat), and two-time Junior All-American Roberto Martinez (Natomas). Keep an eye on Cadet National Champion Mario Estrada of Calvary Chapel, and Junior All-American Sam Saunders of Northview, they will challenge for the top spot.

Other talented competitors include, state qualifier's Jeff Sato (Arroyo Grande), Logan Ingram (Buchanan), and Patrick Payne (Poway). Keep an eye on Anderson's Chance Studer and Sultana's Anthony Rodriguez. Studer placed a solid third at last years' prestigious Five Counties Invitational, while Rodriguez finished second at the Junior Nationals in Fargo, North Dakota.

Preview: Two-time State Champion & Junior All-American Darrell Vasquez of Bakersfield leads a very experienced and well-balanced weight group. After an outstanding performance at the Junior Nationals, Vasquez is on course to win state title number three. Several returning State placers have moved up a weight, or two and will challenge. They include Santa Fe's Zeke Trevino, Brandon Bautista (Gilroy), Anthony Archuleta (Sultana), and Jose Reyes of Brawley. Other state qualifiers to watch are Liberty's two-time Cadet All-American Christian Bowerman, Tyler Moran (Temecula Valley), and Eric Morgan of Rocklin.

Preview: In 1998 Palomino became the first freshman to win a California State title. This year, he's in position to make California history with title number four. Challenging Palomino will be returning finalist Andy Kim of Poway, and state placer Daniel Chapman (Centennial-Bakersfield). Other wrestlers to watch are state qualifiers Javier Campos (Selma), Kirk Fitzpatrick (James Logan), Damon Silva (Lemoore), and Rick Turk of Rim of the World. After an outstanding performance in Fargo, North Dakota this summer, Cadet National finalist Tony Franco of Bakersfield will challenge for a spot in the medal rounds this year.
Note: Since the first state meet in 1973, California has never produced a four-time state champion. Marty Kistler of Notre Dame High School (Southern Section) made four trips to the finals in the early eighties, winning only two. Kistler went on to win two NCAA National Championships for the University of Iowa. Prior to the CIF State meet, California conducted separate Northern and Southern meets. Recent California Hall-of-Fame inductee and NCAA Champion Mark DiGirolamo of Harbor High School won four Northern California Invitational titles in the early seventies when the North and South split the state.

They include, Arroyo Grande's Jeff Owens, Chris Sanchez (Buchanan), Justin Miller (Poway), Eric Fitzpatrick (James Logan), and North Coast Section's two-time qualifier Antoine Fisher of Mt. Eden. This past summer, Brethren Christian's Danny Cadwallader earned All-American honors at the Cadet Nationals, and will be in the mix.

Also returning with a state medal is Rancho Buena Vista's two-time Cadet All-American Juan Mora. Other talented individuals with state experience are, Bakersfield's Drew East, two-time All-American Dustin Tillman (American), Northern Section Champion Daniel Price (Durham), Jorge Evangelista (Parlier), Jerry Barragan (West Valley), and talented sophomore Paul Baird of Poway.

Completing the field of state qualifiers is Cadet All-American Frank Gill (Calvary Chapel), San Diego Champion Keith Kroeger (Granite Hills), and Gus Palacios (North Monterey County). Keep an eye on Rancho Buena Vista's Dan Pearson and Anthony Baza (Fremont-Sunnyvale). Pearson is a past Iowa state placer and won the San Diego Section. Central Coast Section Champion Baza was injured at state last year, and was favored to medal.

They include, Conan Williams (Calvary Chapel), Grant Barnes (Oak Ridge), Chris Chambers (Scripps Ranch), Adam George (Elk Grove), and Cadet National Champion & Four-time All-American Ryan Halsey of Rancho Buena Vista. Keep an eye on East Bakersfield's Britt Mooney. Last year, Mooney missed the medal round by a match, but beat Halsey during the tournament. This weight will be very interesting.
